Year 1

This is an exciting year, as we progress from the EYFS into Key Stage 1.

Staff in school prepare us for this transition through opportunities to visit our new class and spend time with our new teacher.  Phonics learning continues in Year 1, supporting us in becoming confident readers and writers and in preparation for the National Phonics Screen at the end of the year.

The cross-curricular nature of our learning in Year 1 supports us in developing a deeper understanding of a range of themes, including the local area, the animal kingdom and our own families and personal history.  Links between subjects are identified, strengthening our knowledge and reinforcing key skills.

Learning in Year 1 is underpinned by a focus on reading, using carefully selected texts that link to our topics.

Maths in Year One follows the Maths Mastery approach, with a focus on the use of practical, hands-on activities to acquire and reinforce a deeper level of understanding in all areas of the maths curriculum.
